Bootstrapping Business: Grow Your Company Without VC Funding

Bootstrapping Business: Grow Your Company Without VC Funding

In my 30 plus years of business, I’ve been an executive, advisor or investor in over two dozen companies. Some have been VC funded, some were angel funded, some were family funded, and some were classic one customer, 18-hour workday, sleeping in the office, eating top ramen, worrying about every paycheck, bootstrapped endeavors. From this experience, if I have any advice for young entrepreneurs, it would be to not take VC funding unless it’s absolutely necessary. When I say absolutely necessary I’m talking about startups building rocket ships or semi-conductors needing a new fab plant. I’m certainly not talking about a software-as-a-service company with a business efficiency tool. VC funding can make founders lazy, meaning loss of drive and focus. Read More »

The Tech Making Christmas Easier for Shoppers AND Retailers

The Tech Making Christmas Easier for Shoppers AND Retailers

The first Glühwein has been consumed (mit Schuss, naturally), Unter den Linden looks less ugly than usual and task number one of a morning is no longer checking the smartphone but rather, opening another tasty door in the advent calendar. Yup, Christmas is almost upon us. Another sign of impending festive cheer is the blank mind and subsequent panic that sets in when it comes to choosing the perfect gifts for family and friends. There are, of course, plenty of innovative ways to help you get over this particular bump, but it's a space which always booms with solutions this time of year – and the same goes for retailers. Bringing Tech to the Masses with the First Lange Nacht der Startups

Bringing Tech to the Masses with the First Lange Nacht der Startups

There's no denying it, startups have become cool in the past few years. They carry with them an overriding image of young, scruffy computer geeks working away at their screens all hours of the day and night, emerging a few years later with millions in their pocket. It's an image that fits Berlin's unique style perfectly. But most people won't fully understand the reality of founding or working for a young tech company. That is changing, not least thanks to events like the Lange Nacht der Startups (LNdS). Presented by Deutsche Telekom, Amazon WebServices and other partners, the event on September 7 will see the public invited to check out the tech scene for themselves, with 70 startups chosen from 170 applicants to exhibit their products and who they are. Aging2.0 – a global network of startups using smart tech to revolutionise the ageing process

Digital natives, generation Facebook, the “net” generation – these terms are used with abandon to describe Generation Y, the age group that currently ranges from early teens to early thirties. These are the people who grew up with the internet, who could illegally download before they reached high school and who are also typically the Read More »

Another week, another major investment into a Rocket-backed e-commerce venture – albeit this time it's not in an emerging market. Existing shareholders including serial Rocket partners AB Kinnevik and Summit Partners have also participated in the round. News of the World: Hy! Berlin Returns with a Whirlwind of Announcements

It was all going off at the third hy! Berlin event on Sunday evening – a series of entrepreneurs and investors took to the stage at Radialsystem V to make announcements; from a new fund at the German Media Pool to €10 million in investment for a member of the HitFox group, via the launch of a hardware startup accelerator and the return of The Kernel. The second half of the live show saw Austrian tracking app Locca scoop the €30,000 in cash from hub:raum as winners of the startup competition, seeing off some stiff competition in doing so from the likes of Petcube.
