Is Zalando Worth €8.5bn? IPO Rumours Abound as Sales Soar 50 Percent

Rumours of a potential IPO for Zalando are growing as the German e-commerce giant reported soaring revenues in 2013. The company saw its income surge by 50 percent to €1.8 billion, with the core German-speaking region (known as DACH) accounting for a billion of that. It is, however, still making an operating loss. Although the Berlin-based company has been non-committal about plans to go public, many have reported that IPO can be expected this year – with the Wall Street Journal reporting the six-year-old company could have a potential value of a whopping €8.5 billion. Mister Spex Eyes Up Prescription Glasses After Bonanza Year in 2013

Having enjoyed a successful 2013, German e-commerce eyewear specialist Mister Spex – which saw customer numbers surpass a million and revenues hit €47 million – is set to focus on the prescription glasses market this year in a bid to improve market share. In doing so, it is set to challenge Germany's big name opticians, the likes of Fielmann, head on. The revenue figure, which marks an 80 percent increase on 2012, will be especially welcome, and is evidence of the company's increased efforts towards building outside its core market in Germany. The acquisition of Swedish competitors Lensstore and Loveyewear in July “contributed to the successful development of our business,” said founder and CEO Dirk Graber, while Mister Spex's network of local partner opticians in Germany itself rose by 25 percent to 400. Bootstrapping Business: Grow Your Company Without VC Funding

Bootstrapping Business: Grow Your Company Without VC Funding

In my 30 plus years of business, I’ve been an executive, advisor or investor in over two dozen companies. Some have been VC funded, some were angel funded, some were family funded, and some were classic one customer, 18-hour workday, sleeping in the office, eating top ramen, worrying about every paycheck, bootstrapped endeavors. From this experience, if I have any advice for young entrepreneurs, it would be to not take VC funding unless it’s absolutely necessary. When I say absolutely necessary I’m talking about startups building rocket ships or semi-conductors needing a new fab plant. I’m certainly not talking about a software-as-a-service company with a business efficiency tool. VC funding can make founders lazy, meaning loss of drive and focus. Read More »

The Tech Making Christmas Easier for Shoppers AND Retailers

The Tech Making Christmas Easier for Shoppers AND Retailers

The first Glühwein has been consumed (mit Schuss, naturally), Unter den Linden looks less ugly than usual and task number one of a morning is no longer checking the smartphone but rather, opening another tasty door in the advent calendar. Yup, Christmas is almost upon us. Another sign of impending festive cheer is the blank mind and subsequent panic that sets in when it comes to choosing the perfect gifts for family and friends. There are, of course, plenty of innovative ways to help you get over this particular bump, but it's a space which always booms with solutions this time of year – and the same goes for retailers.
