A Golden Opportunity at the App Olympics

By Toni Ellis |

Fancy taking part in the Olympics without actually, you know, doing any sport? This may be the thing for you – the first App Olympics from BeMyApp will take place later this month, with Berlin one of seven host cities.

The event will consist of a 48-hour hackathon and startup bootcamp, with the Berlin leg being held at the Ahoy! co-working space in Charlottenburg from Friday, Feb. 24 to Sunday, Feb 26. The focus is on creating the next generation of mobile apps for iOS, Android Windows and the web, with the aim being for competing teams to develop an idea into an actual product.

Unlike the real Olympics, the techie equivalent isn’t limited to one venue, taking place simultaneously in San Francisco, New York, Dallas, London, Paris and Zurich as well as Berlin over three days. Registered participants will be given one minute to pitch their app concept in front of an audience, and once a jury of engineers and designers have selected the best ideas, teams are formed to start developing the most promising into actual apps.

By the final night, a winner from each city will be announced, in Berlin’s case determined by a jury of experts from the German mobile industry. Online voting will then decide which city’s app will be awarded the App Olympics gold medal.

Berlin’s winning team will receive prizes including flights to Silicon Valley and a week’s accommodation for two, while all participants will be in with the chance of winning freebies such as Nokia Lumina 800 devices and six-month accounts with Storage Room and HockeyApp.

The event’s sponsors include Nokia, 6wunderkinder, WorkHub and Amen, and spots are limited – you can register for free here.
