Munich-based BoxCrypter narrowly missed out on the £100,000 prize fund as Seedrs emerged as victors in the Startup Competition at the London Web Summit. BoxCrypter, which allows users to encrypt data they keep in the cloud, had won their way out of the initial 20 to make the last four.
But it was Seedrs, an online platform for investing seed capital, which was given the nod by the judges at the end of a long and fascinating day in the UK.
The other two startups which made the final, where they pitched to an audience which seemingly contained most of the 1,000 plus people in attendence at LWS, were second-placed BusyFlow, a workspace which allows users to collaborate and manage cloud apps, and Six3, a short, private video messaging service.
The winner was announced after a typically engaging talk from serial investor Morten Lund, who live pitched his latest project, GoGlobal, at two VCs who had been press-ganged onto the page.
