NIB: Delivery Hero Serves Up Series E Round Worth $88m

In a boost to Berlin's reputation as a place to move startups to the next level, food delivery platform Delivery Hero has revealed Series E financing worth a weighty $88 million (€64.5m). The round is being led by Insight Ventures Partners, and the money will primarily be used to fuel growth in existing markets and on further innovation. Restaurant reservation and yield management platform Quandoo has closed a $8 million (€5.86m) Series B led by DN Capital and Holtzbrinck Ventures. Fabian Siegel’s GFC Invests in British Ecommerce Funder Iwoca

German investment firm Global Founders Capital (GFC) has taken part in a £5 million (€6.1m) round in British startup Iwoca, which provides short-term finance to online retailers in the UK. Iwoca says it will use the money to drive growth and leverage its current operations. GFC was formed as a partnership between Oliver and Marc Samwer of Rocket Internet fame and Fabian Siegel, former CEO and co-founder of Berlin-based fast food startup DeliveryHero. In a statement, Siegel said that the fund is looking to invest in proven concepts with a large market potential: “The team at Iwoca has demonstrated extraordinary execution skills and [is] committed to breaking new ground in business lending. We will put our expertise in building Internet companies and our global network at their disposal to help them drive [forward].” Read More »

Axel Springer's Uli Schmitz and Fee Beyer of hub:raum are dusting off their handlebars and getting ready to saddle up for the Techbikers challenge. The pair are the VIP participants in the Prague to Berlin cycle ride, which is aimed at promoting relationships between tech scenes in the city as well as raising money for a good cause. Uli is head of the Axel Springer Plug and Play accelerator while Fee is the program manager of Deutsche Telekom's equivalent. A Hefty Takeaway: Delivery Hero Closes $30m Series D Led By Phenomen

Delivery Hero has closed a €30 million Series D round led by Phenomen Ventures in what is a very large deal in Berlin terms. The round, which is also being supported by existing investors, comes as the company additionally revealed it will reach profitability this year. The company is one of the world's largest online food ordering platform, pulling in information from more than 35,000 restaurants in 14 countries. Will the next cab off the rank for Rocket Internet's global expansion plans be the taxi app space? The incubator is pouring another $15 million (€11.45m) into Easy Taxi, an example of such a platform in Latin America, through its subsidiary in the region, Latin America Internet Holding, which is also partly owned by telco Millicom. The principle behind Easy Taxi is a familiar one – use the mobile app, which comes on iOS, Android and BlackBerry, to order a cab directly when you need one.
